Bad Bug! No Start Diagnosis. (2016 Beetle)
A 2016 Beetle 1.8 turbo with an interesting no start situation. The car was running fine before the no start condition. First the ECM was scanned for codes. no codes relevant to the no start were found. Next was to find and display PIDs relating to both high and low fuel pressure, intake air temp, and RPM. The fuel pressures appeared to be sufficient enough to allow the engine to start. Also, the scanner displayed an RPM signal, indicating a good crank sensor.
Next, the oscilloscope is connected to the crank sensor and intake cam sensor. Unfortunately, this model doesn't have an exhaust cam sensor, which would have aided the diagnosis. Both produced a reasonably good pattern, and were compared to a known good pattern, indicating that the intake cam was out by about 11 degrees. enough to be of concern, but not enough to create a no start condition.
Following this, an in-cylinder compression tester was installed on cylinder one, as well as attaching the scope leads to the coil and injector to look at coil and injector timing while cranking the engine. The coil and injector appear to be firing at the correct time, but something funny is happening inside the cylinder. It's showing not one but two compression strokes per cycle! Now, we know that it's definitely not a two stroke, so what's going on?
By this point we know that electrically everything is fine, so the engine will need to be torn down to determine the cause of this mechanical issue. Watch to the end!
