Top 10 Foods Banned In America

For many, the United States is the land of freedom and the greatest country on earth. It's the bastion of
democracy, the home of liberty, and the defender of the poor and homeless. Generally, to many people,
America is a great country. And, perhaps more importantly, a free one.
But even in America, the promised country, the bastion of liberty (America has a statue to that effect)
and the home of the brave, freedom has its limits. What limits, you may ask. Asides the fact that there
are laws that can limit your supposed freedom, there are also laws that seem to dictate what you can
eat or not eat.
Yes, that's right. America has laws for food. If you didn't know that, now you do. And these laws not only
prescribe who can cook food or sell it, but they also ban certain kinds of food as well.
And just so you don't get into trouble with the freedom enforcing authorities, we're going to be going
through the top ten banned foods in America.
Get ready for a not so foody ride. Or a foody ride. It actually depends on whether you are ready to be a
food felon or not.
#10 Ackee Fruit
If you're in America and have never heard of this fruit or seen it, it's probably because it's literal
contraband. And is less tasty than hard drugs. Or something.
What is the Ackee fruit, exactly? Well, it is a fruit that is bright red when fully developed (perhaps red for
danger?) and has three to four sections of flesh. In these sections, there are usually glossy big black
seeds. The fruit is from Jamaica, and unsurprisingly, is their national fruit.
So why was this bright red Jamaican wonder banned? Well, apparently unripe and inedible parts of the
fruit are poisonous and can induce the Jamaican vomiting sickness.
What that means is that you may experience extreme dehydration, severe vomiting and may even go
into a coma.
Perhaps banning this fruit was a good idea.

#9 Queen Conch
Despite what the name of this fruit may make you think, it isn't actually a queen holding a conch. In fact,
it's neither a queen nor a conch. It is just what it is.
And what is it?

The Queen Conch is a large sea snail that is from the Caribbean islands. In case you're wondering, it's
banned not because it's poisonous or anything, but because of ecological reasons. Because of
overfishing, the queen Conch is now greatly endangered. To curb demand that spurs supply, the
importation of the snail from the Caribbean has now been completely banned.

#8 Shark Fin
Yes, Karen, people eat the fins of Sharks. And they are banned in twelve American states.
But what are shark fins? How are they made? Do people just chop off the fins of Sharks and fry them?
Hmm, not particularly.
Shark fins are basically a Chinese delicacy and are made into a kind of soup. However, for years people
and environmental groups have complained about the process of obtaining these fins. Most fishermen
who get these fins from sharks just slice them off and throw the shark back into the water, leaving them
to die.
Asides that, sharks have become an endangered species because of overfishing. That's why it has
become important for the shark fins to be banned in some states in America.
However, it hasn't been smooth sailing for these states.
A great example is California. A shark fin ban in the state was passed into law in 2011, and almost
immediately the trade went underground. Asides from a few dealers who were caught during the first
few weeks of the ban, it has been difficult to catch suspects.
One of the reasons why it has been difficult to enforce this ban is that it is easy for dealers to store their
produce off-site. And since the punishment for defaulters isn't stern enough to act as a deterrent, the
crime goes on.

#7 Swans
Who would want to eat swans? Exactly. I almost don't even want to go into the real reason why it's
illegal to eat swans in America. C'mon, they are just cute duck-like things that like to float sometimes.
Why would you ever want to eat them?
Well, even if you love eating Swans, you're not legally allowed to hunt or eat them. This is because they
are an endangered species. In fact, the United Kingdom had an interesting approach to keeping swans
alive. It's illegal to hunt or eat swans in the UK because the royal family owns them all.
How about that.
