Discussing Whether or Not to Tune or Sharpen the Metal Edges of Your Backcountry XC Skis

I've been contacted twice in the past week about whether or not it was important to sharpen the edges of your backcountry xc skis. So I thought it was time to talk a little about the subject. Please note, however, that this is basically a short video of me talking. It's not a how-to tune your edges video. That'll come later.

But the bottom line is that unless the metal edges on your backcountry xc skis are completely trashed or you have a very pronounced nick or ding on them, I wouldn't worry to much about trying to sharpen them.

In all honesty, I don't specifically sharpen the metal edges of my backcountry xc skis. I'll only address them if they appear to be particularly dinged or nicked. And then I'll only work the specific problem areas. And the reason for this is that a really sharp edge will catch on any imperfection in the snow's surface. And that usually breaks my rhythm when I'm diagonal striding. So I don't mind if the edges are a bit worn out. That just makes them more forgiving :)

Anyway, let me know what your thoughts are on the matter in the comment section below. Do you feel the need to sharpen the metal edges of your backcountry xc skis? If so, how often and what's the benefit?
