Train Cab Ride NL / Empty Train / Alkmaar – Beverwijk - Haarlem / DDAR / Sep 2017
Train Drivers View on an empty train running from Alkmaar via Beverwijk to Haarlem. As you might’ve read in the description under the last video I was planning on uploading a longer video this week. Unfortunately the file on my GoPro got corrupted and I wasn’t able to download it from my GoPro. So, this week a video from my video stock.
So, we get to run a DDAR with a locomotive and three carriages. During rush hour we have extra intercity’s running between Alkmaar and Haarlem in the busiest direction. In the morning to Haarlem and in the afternoon to Alkmaar. After that the train changes direction and heads back without passengers to its starting point.
It’s 18.35 and we depart on time from Alkmaar. On Routelint (a program on the driver’s computer) we can already see there’s a intercity running in front of us with a 2 minute delay. Because of this we don’t accelerate to the maximum speed to avoid running to red signals on our way to Uitgeest. And this worked perfectly. Because of our lower speed we meet our first yellow signal just before Uitgeest. As soon as we’ve passed the signal the junctions at Uitgeest change to the right direction and then we get a better signal on the light signal ahead.
Because we’re a minute behind on schedule when we run through Uitgeest we speed the train up to its maximum speed as soon as that is possible. Normally you don’t have to do this when you’re on time. But because we do, we arrive perfectly on time at our short stopover in Beverwijk. This is done because there’s still a sprinter service running in front of us. If we would’ve left the station earlier we would have met some red signals on our way to Haarlem.
When we leave Beverwijk we speed up to 40km/h and let the weight of the train do the rest of the work until we get our net speed signal (100km/h). At that point we accelerate to the maximum speed once more and then shut down the engines for the rest of the ride. On our approach in Haarlem we hit some yellow signals again. This is because of that sprinter service that is running in front of us. You’ll see the speed limits change from now and then. But because we keep running to yellow signals (40km/h) we don’t get the opportunity to speed up the train anymore.
And of course we arrive perfectly on time in Haarlem. I hope you’ve enjoy the video. Stay tuned for the next one! Cheers!
