The footage was shared on March 27 by the Shark Bay Caravan Park in Denham, showing skies glowing a blood‑red hue that looked straight out of a sci‑fi movie. So what caused it? According to forecasting company AccuWeather, the dramatic color shift happened as dust filled the air ahead of Tropical Cyclone Narelle. Environmental scientist Thomas Gill explained that the region’s desert soil contains large amounts of iron oxide, essentially rust, which gives the dust its red color. When strong winds sweep through, they lift these fine particles into the atmosphere, tinting the sky an intense crimson. Cyclones aren’t the only weather events capable of creating this effect. Similar red skies were seen during Australia’s devastating 2019 wildfires, when smoke and ash flooded the air. Thankfully, this surreal moment was short‑lived. Just two days later, Shark Bay Caravan Park posted another video revealing clear blue skies once again, writing, “What a difference 48 hours makes.”
