'It appears that at about 9.25 tonight, UNMIK police car - marked, red and white - the UNMIK police car that was on patrol near Podujevo had reason to stop the vehicle here on the highway. As it stopped the vehicle it was attacked by unknown gunman and large number of shots were fired into the car. The police car contained a total of four people. Two people have died. I am not confirming their identities until we have a contact with their next of kin.'

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Derrek Chappell, U.N. Police Spokesman:
'We have this area sealed off, we have checkpoints probably in about two to three kilometers intervals. This is a very extensive crime scene, a lot of bullets have been fired, and our first concern is to control this crime scene and to gather whatever evidence we can, to give first aid to the people who have been injured and to notify the families of those that are dead. As soon as that has been done I will give their details to you."
Q. Can you tell us whether we have got Kosovo police and International police (inaudible) with us?
'This patrol involved international and KPS (local) officers. I would rather not identify their nationalities now, because you can imagine we will have very concerned family members, until such times when we are able to inform the people who are related to the deceased.'

STORYLINE:
Two police officers were shot to death in an attack in the village of Sakovica on Tuesday killing one international officer and one local officer, said UN police spokesman Derek Chapell.
An interpreter was seriously injured.
Authorities did not reveal which country the international officer came from.
The shooting occurred at 9.25 pm local time (2025 GMT) near a bus. The red and white UN police car was run off the side of the road, its blue light still flashing.
"This is a very extensive crime scene," Chappell said. "A lot of bullets have been fired."
NATO-led peacekeepers and police reinforcements arrived at the scene and started searching a small hill with flashlights.
Authorities were questioning the passengers of the bus.
The attack seemed certain to increase tensions that were already high following three days of rioting by ethnic Albanian mobs that left 28 people
dead, about 600 injured and 4,000 homeless.
Sakovica is 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of the Kosovo capital Pristina.
