Here’s Why Andaman & Nicobar Islands Hold Key To India’s Maritime Security & Trade |Defence Dispatch

After decades of resisting infrastructure development in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the govt of India has realised its strategic importance. The Islands provide a vantage point to the Malacca strait which is one of the busiest shipping routes and much of China-bound oil passes through it. While China has also expanded its influence in the Indian Ocean region, India is trying best to leverage its strategic position in the Andamans.
New Delhi has put a renewed focus on developing the islands with PM Modi in late 2020 launching fibre optic cable to improve connectivity. Not just that, a string of infrastructure projects are underway and that also includes ramping up the Indian Navy bases and building vital maritime security infrastructure in the region.
