GECOM SHOULD DECLARE RECOUNT RESULTS, DR RUPERT ROOPNARINE SAYS, AS HE REFLECTS ON THE LIFE OF DR WA

In remembering the passion and spirit that drove the historian and political activist Dr Walter Rodney, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, who worked with him for many years before he was killed, says the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) should act swiftly to declare the results of the national vote recount and allow the country to move on. Dr Roopnaraine sticks to his position that Dr Rodney was killed by the PNC-government 40 years ago on June 13, 1980. And in an interview with the News Room, he spoke of Dr Rodney’s vision for real unity in Guyana, and why with the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) in the Coalition government was not able to achieve some of the ideals Dr Rodney struggled for. Dr Rodney was killed at age 38 when a bomb exploded in his car near the Camp Street prison. It was claimed that that a sergeant in the Guyana Defence Force, named Gregory Smith, had given Rodney the bomb. Smith fled to French Guiana, where he died in 2002.
