US Pushes Oil Sales to India - But At What Cost to Our Economy?

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington is ready to supply “as much oil as India will buy,” signalling a major push to expand American energy exports to India. He also announced that Venezuela’s Interim President will visit India next week, with Venezuelan oil expected to be high on the agenda.

But this raises serious questions: why is India being nudged toward expensive American oil when cheaper options exist?

India has benefited from buying discounted crude from countries like Russia and Venezuela, helping keep inflation and fuel prices in check. US oil, on the other hand, often comes at a higher price - with added transportation costs and greater pressure on India’s dollar reserves.

The consequences are straightforward: costlier oil means higher fuel prices, more inflation, and a bigger burden on ordinary Indians.

So the government must answer:

Why should India pay more for oil to serve America’s strategic interests?
Is our energy policy being shaped by national interest - or diplomatic pressure?
Why is there no transparency on how much this shift could cost the Indian economy?

India’s energy policy should protect Indian consumers - not turn them into collateral damage in someone else’s geopolitical game.
