Witness D's Scary Testimony | Kelebogile Thepa Kidnapped & Threatened | Madlanga Commission | 14 November 2025
On Friday 14 November 2025, the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry heard two of its most chilling testimonies yet.
Former EMPD spokesperson Lt Col Kelebogile Thepa took the stand and revealed she was kidnapped and threatened with death — not once, but twice — after she proposed an internal investigation into misconduct within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department. She believed the attacks were direct retaliation for refusing to stay silent.
Then, in a partial in-camera session, a mysterious new witness known only as Witness D testified about a murder scene in Brakpan — where EMPD Deputy Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi was allegedly called in to help clean it up. Witness D told the commission that Mkhwanazi suggested the body of the deceased be thrown into a mine shaft or dumped in a dam — and looked directly at Witness D when he said it.
His testimony corroborated that of suspended EMPD Police Chief Jabulani Mapiyeye and retired Deputy Police Chief Revo Spies.
Three weeks after testifying, Witness D — later identified as Marius van der Merwe — was shot dead outside his Brakpan home in front of his wife and children.
