Trump backs down on Hormuz escort operation amid Iran deal push

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he is halting the US military operation to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz after just one day, in a bid to reach a deal with Iran to end the Middle East war.

The initiative, dubbed “Project Freedom,” began Monday to help vessels leave the narrow chokepoint to the Gulf, where Iran seized control after being attacked.

Trump said on Truth Social the pause came at the request of mediator Pakistan and other countries, citing “great progress” toward a final agreement.

He stressed the blockade of Iranian ports will remain in force while talks continue.

Tensions had escalated over the Hormuz operation, with the US reporting it had sunk seven Iranian boats and several civilian vessels coming under attack.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Washington has completed its offensive campaign against Iran, known as “Operation Epic Fury,” saying the Hormuz clashes were defensive in nature.

The war began Feb 28 when Israel and the United States attacked Iran, killing top leaders and striking military and economic sites.

Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks across the region.
