The latest episode on my platform addressess the impacts of uniting arts and social activism.
My guest - Punit Reddy was born in a small town in India with a curious mind and a passion for photography. Growing up, they were drawn to capturing the stories of marginalised communities and shedding light on their struggles. However, it wasn't until they stumbled upon the transgender community that their path as a photographer took a transformative turn. As Punit delved deeper into their work, Punit decided to use their photography as a medium for social change, to break down stereotypes and amplify the voices of the transgender community. In the 2019 Kumbh Mela, Punit curated the Art village in collaboration with 'Kinnar Akhara' where photography, painting, mural art became platforms for storytelling, empowerment, and advocacy. This pioneer initiative called Kinnart Village evolved Punit into an "Artivist" - an artist and activist combined.
Punit's photo essay and other artist work at Kinnart Village became catalysts for conversations around gender identity, acceptance, and equality. Through their profound ability to blend art and activism, Punit has emerged as a photo essayist. The Photo narrative “Reclaiming the lost spiritual Identity - Kinnar Akhara” & Curating this intersectional art space called (Kinnart Village) in religious gathering which not only transcends the boundaries of traditional photography exhibition, creating a tapestry of images that not only tell stories but ignite movements.
