Myanmar could become a ‘wholly-owned subsidiary’ of China

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Myanmar will become a “wholly-owned subsidiary” of Communist China if the west isolates it in the wake of the recent military coup.

On February 1 the military overthrew democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi who has since been detained and charged.

Military leader Min Aung Hlaing has now taken control and vowed to hold new elections after which he will transfer power over to the winner, whilst reiterating claims of irregularities in last year’s elections.

Mr Sheridan told Sky News, provided the military dictatorship “doesn’t start killing a large number of people,” the Australian government shouldn't burn up the relationship with Myanmar.

“What will happen if the west totally isolates Myanmar and goes in for widespread sanctions and so on is Myanmar will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of China.”
