The Doobie Brothers - Carry Me Away

Lesser known Doobie Brothers song from the Takin' it to the Streets album, the transition period when Michael McDonald assumed the lead singing role. This was the first time the new direction the band was taking in terms of their sound was heard. The guitars are still there but there's also piano, horns, and vocal harmonies.

The track lists Mc Donald, Patrick Simmons, and Jeff Baxter as songwriters but the song's overall concept appears to be more McDonald's own. The lyrics talk about the town of East St. Louis, Illinois, once known for its music, the town where Miles Davis and Ike and Tina Turner were from. There was apparently a Leo's Blue Note Club, the happening blues club during the town's heyday.
