Bakersfield Hostage Standoff: 10 Rescued From Chase Bank Building After FBI Response

A nearly 16-hour Bakersfield hostage standoff ended in downtown Bakersfield after 10 hostages were rescued from the Chase Bank building near 17th Street and Chester Avenue. Authorities identified the suspect as 41-year-old Anthony Scott Searles-Harris, who police say entered the Chase Bank building with what appeared to be an explosive device, barricaded himself on the second floor, and held Kern County Superintendent of Schools employees hostage.

This Central Valley crime story quickly became one of the biggest breaking news events in Bakersfield, California. Early reports described the situation as a hostage crisis at Chase Bank, but officials later clarified that the hostages were not simply inside the bank branch. They were Kern County Superintendent of Schools employees in second-floor office space inside the Chase Bank building in downtown Bakersfield.

According to officials, Bakersfield police responded Tuesday afternoon after reports of a bomb threat at the Chase Bank building on 17th Street. Police said the suspect claimed he had explosives on him and also claimed some hostages had explosives attached to them. The threat brought a massive law enforcement response to downtown Bakersfield, including the Bakersfield Police Department, FBI, SWAT teams, bomb technicians, crisis negotiators, emergency crews, and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team.

Negotiators worked for hours as downtown streets shut down, nearby buildings were evacuated, and authorities tried to end the Bakersfield Chase Bank building hostage situation peacefully. Police said two hostages were released during negotiations. Officials also said one hostage secretly stayed in contact with law enforcement by phone until her battery died, giving authorities critical information from inside the second-floor office area.

As negotiations stalled overnight, the FBI took operational control of the crisis site. Early Wednesday morning, the FBI Hostage Rescue Team entered the building and shot and killed the suspect, ending the standoff. All 10 hostages were rescued alive. Officials said none of the hostages suffered physical injuries, although the emotional impact of the downtown Bakersfield hostage crisis may last much longer.

Investigators later said the suspected explosive devices did not appear to be an active threat, but the case remains under investigation. Authorities are still reviewing the suspect’s background, the timeline of the hostage standoff, the reported bomb threat, and the circumstances that led to the FBI response.
