Modesto Triple Homicide: 3 Generations Killed on Monterey Avenue | Baby Mateo, Fabiola & Silvia
A heartbreaking Modesto triple homicide has left a Central Valley family and community grieving after three generations were killed inside a home on Monterey Avenue.
According to Modesto police and local reports, officers responded shortly after 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, to the 1600 block of Monterey Avenue in Modesto, California, near Orville Wright Elementary School, after a reported disturbance. When officers arrived, they found 23-year-old Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez suffering from stab wounds. She died at the scene.
As officers searched the home, they found Fabiola’s mother, 54-year-old Maria Sylvia Nunez-Villalobos, and a two-week-old infant. Maria died at the scene, and the baby, identified by family as Mateo Gonzalez, was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Police say another young child was also found inside the home and taken for medical evaluation. Because the home was near Orville Wright Elementary School, the school was placed on lockdown while officers searched the area. Students and staff were later relocated to La Loma Junior High School as a precaution.
Investigators later identified the suspect as 28-year-old Joaquin Escoto. Police say he was found hiding inside a nearby residence and taken into custody without incident. Authorities believe Escoto and Fabiola shared a child, though the exact relationship remains under investigation. Police have said the case appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
This video looks at what police have confirmed so far, what happened on Monterey Avenue, how the school lockdown unfolded, what is known about the victims, and how the Modesto community is remembering Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez, Maria Sylvia Nunez-Villalobos, and baby Mateo Gonzalez.
This is one of the most heartbreaking Central Valley crime stories of the week: a grandmother, a young mother, and a newborn baby remembered through candles, flowers, photos, stuffed animals, and a community left grieving.
