Pangawogo Ninga Akì (Heartbeat of Mother Earth) by Emily Akikodjiwan Brascoupé-Hoefler
Algonquin Anishinabe artist and educator Emily Akikodjiwan Brascoupé-Hoefler creates art inspired by her family and community.
Pangawogo Ninga Akì – meaning Heartbeat of Mother Earth in Anishinaabemowin – acknowledges the land, the waters, the sky and the Algonquin People, who have lived on the land on which the NAC is located since time immemorial. The artwork also sends a message about walking gently on the land and taking care of each other.
Emily says she completed the piece at this time last year, in the days leading up to the Winter Solstice — a time of storytelling in many Indigenous cultures when Elders gather the children and share knowledge.
As a gift to Canadians for the holidays, we are delighted to be sharing Pangawogo Ninga Akì on the Kipnes Lantern and on our social media channels. May this beautiful work inspire us all to walk gently on the land. Read more online about this artwork featured on the Kipnes Lantern to lift your spirits.
