Meta ‘ranks criminals’ ahead of journalists: Federal Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones
The Australian Media Writer Sophie Elsworth details Federal Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones' claim that Meta ranks “criminals above journalists.”
Mr Jones accused the Mark Zuckerberg-owned tech company of being more sympathetic to the criminal world than the free press.
It comes as the Labor government are awaiting advice from the ACCC and Treasury as to whether or not they can designate the social media company under the news media bargaining code to force Meta to negotiate payments to Australian news publishers for the right to use their content.
Meta on the other hand have said they will “do a Canada,” and pull all news from its platforms if the government pushes ahead with the move.
Ms Ellsworth told Sky News Australia it is “not clear” what the government’s next step will be.
