Advanced Music Theory - Harmony

Harmonising a melody with chords, inversions and cadences. Learn all about advanced music harmony, building and choosing chords and how to harmonise a melody. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8 music theory. When we look at music, we can think about it in two different ways. We can look at it from left to right - this is the melody and rhythm. Or, we can look at it from top to bottom - this is the harmony. Harmony is two or more notes played together at the same time. As soon as there is more than one pitch sounding at a time, you have harmony. The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them. This music theory lesson will explain how chords are built, chord inversions, chord progressions and cadences, the different naming systems used to describe chords and most importantly how to choose chords to harmonise a melody. We'll start with a melody and go through the process of chord choices and what to think about when harmonising music.
