Advanced Music Theory - Melody Writing
Advanced melody writing tips and techniques. Learn about melody writing structure, rhythm, planning keys, chord progressions and cadences, looking at inessential notes and thinking about conjunct and disjunct movement. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8 music theory. This music theory lesson demonstrates how to compose a melody from a given opening. Helpful if you want to develop your melody writing skills, or work in the style of a given opening, or if you are working for higher grade theory exams. After a general introduction to principles of melody writing the video explores the question of structure in order to ensure that you end up with a melody that hangs together. This involves the planning of phrase lengths, keys, cadences, and modulations. You will then learn how to consider the harmonic implications when writing a melody and how to deal with harmonic rhythm. We then explore essential and inessential notes in the light of the harmonic thinking. You will then be shown how to analyse the ideas contained within the given material so that these can be developed during the melody. Consideration is given to the balance between conjunct and disjunct movement, along with a consideration of the implications of tempo, style and period, plus writing idiomatically for a particular instrument. This music theory lesson will give you plenty of ideas for writing successful melodies in any style.
