John Deere excavator track repair – thrown track!

This video is about fixing the track on my John Deere model 690A excavator. We were doing some tree clearing here at the Normstead, and because the old-style track adjusters on this machine are frozen up (rusted), I had neglected to tighten the tracks on my excavator, and I threw a track on it... the track came off the drive wheel. The tracks on this machine weigh maybe 2,000 lbs (1,000 kg) each, so they're not easy to move or replace.

Since the adjusters are frozen and the track had come off the machine so far, I had to split the track to get it back on... and I was under a tight timeline, because I had someone here felling trees for us that day – so I needed the machine to be able to move logs and clear our driveway. I got the job done in about two hours, alone, kneeling in the mud in the pouring rain, and trying to get some pics and video to share with you all too!

I'm now lubing the track adjusters with a 50% - 50% mixture of ATF and acetone, to try to get them to free up so I can properly adjust the track tension – to prevent this from happening again...
