Over the past couple of decades, hundreds of Indian children have been kidnapped and sold to Western countries. Despite the exposure of the illegal baby trade, Indian authorities seem powerless to stop it.
In 1996, Sunamas husband sold two of their children to traffickers. "I wept. I tried to hang myself, so I could die," recalls Sunama. She didnt know where they were, or if they were even alive. But Akil and Sabila were happily living in Canberra, Australia. Julia and Barry Rollings had adopted them, believing their parents had given them up due to illness. Yet when the Rollings read that the orphanage had been linked to a kidnapping scandal, they became suspicious. Months later they received an email. "The two words I just remember is the stolen and sold," tells Julia. Despite the fear that we might lose our children, they told Akil and Sabila the truth and decided to find their birth mother. Julia is determined to stop the same happening to others. "I want to channel some of my energy into making sure adoptions are conducted ethically."
