Ed O'Brien - Echoes With Jehnny Beth - ARTE Concert

Following the electro projects of singer Thom Yorke, the film scores of guitarist Jonny Greenwood and the two atmospheric albums of drummer Phil Selway, it’s now the turn of Ed O’Brien, the Radiohead guitarist, to go solo, as we discover on the stage of Echoes with Jehnny Beth.

For years Ed O’Brien refused to make a solo album but – to the delight of Radiohead fans – he has changed his mind and released Earth (2020), a dense and well-crafted work that bears witness to the rich universe of this 52-year-old artist. And for this album, recorded between London and Wales, he made sure to surround himself with such eminent collaborators as vocalist Laura Marling, Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley, and his Radiohead colleague Colin Greenwood on bass.

We can’t fail to notice Radiohead’s influence on this project, whether it be in the chords, the electro arrangements or the atmospheric flights of fancy that make us nostalgic for the 1990s and 2000s. Invited to appear on the stage of the Yoyo Club by Jehnny Beth for Echoes, Ed O’Brien reveals all the nuances of his complex, elegant rock.

Après les projets électro du chanteur Thom Yorke, les B.O. du guitariste Jonny Greenwood et les deux albums atmosphériques du batteur Phil Selway, c’est au tour d’Ed O’Brien, le guitariste de Radiohead, de se lancer en solo ! On le découvre sur la scène d’Echoes with Jehnny Beth.

Pendant de nombreuses années, Ed O'Brien a refusé l’idée d’un album solo. Pour le bonheur des fans de Radiohead, il change d’avis et sort Earth (2020), un opus, dense et bien ficelé, qui témoigne de la richesse de l’univers de cet artiste de 52 ans. Et pour cet album enregistré entre Londres et le Pays de Galles, il ne manque pas de bien s’entourer en collaborant avec la chanteuse Laura Marling, Adrian Utley, le guitariste de Portishead et son acolyte Colin Greenwood, le bassiste de Radiohead. On ne peut pas s’empêcher d’entendre dans ce projet la « patte Radiohead », que ce soit dans ses accords, ses arrangements électro et ses envolées atmosphériques, invoquant une nostalgie des années 1990 et 2000. Invité par Jehnny Beth dans Echoes sur la scène du Yoyo Club, Ed O'Brien déplie toutes les nuances de son rock complexe et élégant.Concert capté le 10 mars 2020 au Yoyo, Paris.

Viele Jahre lang hatte sich O’Brien gegen die Idee eines Soloalbums gesträubt, doch sehr zur Freude der Fans von Radiohead hat er seine Meinung revidiert und nun mit „Earth“ ein atmosphärisch dichtes und sorgfältig durchkonzipiertes Album vorgelegt. Der 52-Jährige hat es in London und Wales aufgenommen und stellt darauf ein facettenreiches musikalisches Universum vor. Unterstützt wird er von Sängerin Laura Marling, dem Portishead-Gitarristen Adrian Utley sowie seinem Radiohead-Bandkollegen Colin Greenwood.

Das Projekt trägt die typische Radiohead-Handschrift, sei es in den Akkordfolgen, den Elektro-Arrangements oder den sphärischen Interludes, aber dieser Anflug von nostalgischer Erinnerung an die 1990er und 2000er Jahre macht auch seinen Charme aus. Als Gast bei Jehnny Beth auf der Bühne des Pariser Yoyo Clubs präsentiert Ed O’Brien die vielen Facetten seiner Rockmusik mit all ihrer komplexen Schönheit und Eleganz.
