How to see the Victorian High Country over a weekend - Happy Go Travel

The Victorian High country is a magical place, camping, 4wding, fishing and so much more. Come and get a glimpse of what makes it so special.

This 3 day trip is my opinion on the best way to see the most of what the Victorian high country has to offer in a short amount of time. You will see some of the best huts, go along some famous tracks, see some amazing high country rivers and have a beer and a feed at an iconic pub. We started this adventure on the Mansfield side of the Alpine National Park, and come back through Bright with a quick Counter meal at the Dargo Pub.

The common questions I get asked.
What sort of 4wd do you need? As long as it has low range and decent brakes it’ll be fine.
What sort of modifications will I need? Decent tyres and some recovery gear.
Is the 4wding hard? Not really, but it is generally steep with huge drops to the sides so take it seriously.
What was the hardest track & why? Basalt S Track, We went up it was by far the steepest with a few tight tricky corners.
What was the best thing on the trip? The camping & rivers.
How many kilometres between fuel stops? Around 300 km Mansfield to Dargo, around 100 km Dargo to Bright.
How long was the trip? 4 days 3 nights including travel to & from Newcastle
