Fraser island In a weekend - Top to bottom including the western side- HGT Vlog

Fraser Island weekend trip. If you talk to most they’ll tell you that you couldn’t possibly do Fraser Island in 3 days. Now that we have done it a few times I know exactly where I want to go and what to do.

Don’t get me wrong I could easily spend weeks in this magical part of the world. Especially because it is 1000km just to Inskip Point from home. But when it’s a good mate’s 40th birthday why not do something memorable.
We did rough out a quick plan and decided to wing everything else along the way. Damo’s new Raptor Ranger didn’t even arrive until the day before we left. So we were definitely cutting it fine.

Home to Inskip 1000km of straight up high way driving. But surprisingly I did learn a little about the Y62 Patrol. Highway fuel consumption was actually really good as well sitting on 13.1 L to 100km.

We camped the night at Inskip Point so we could get straight on the boat in the morning and head off to Fraser. As always Inskip point is really soft sand but Fraser is hard packed. Having 400 ponies in my pocket this time I decided to just hit it on 20 psi. We had no issues but I’d still recommend a lower pressure for this few hundred meters of sand if you haven’t experienced it before.

Being on the island early we decided to hit up the picturesque waters of Lake McKenzie for a few hours going via Eurong. This place is an absolute must for Fraser, I actually was going to give it a miss this time. I am so glad we didn’t.

From here we dawdled our way back across to the eastern beach where we headed up to Eli Creek. I didn’t actually get any footage here because we were just enjoying the moment. Floating down Eli with a beer in hand is an absolute must. At least once in your lifetime.

After lunch and chilling we kept heading north where we crossed to the west Via Woralie Rd. here we checked out Woralie Creek and set up camp for the night in time to check out an epic western beach sunset. There are not many places on the east coast of Australia where you can see the sun set over the ocean. That’s what makes the west side of Fraser special for me.

One of the main reasons we camped at Woralie Creek was its convenient positioning for the Fraser Island S.S. Maheno Anzac day service. If you ever have the opportunity to attend one I highly recommend it.

We chilled out had lunch and then slowly made our way up to Champagne Pools. They were a little shallower than I remember from previous years with more sand build up. Still a great place to kill a few hours and, you guessed it… chill out. After all that’s what Fraser Island is all about to me. Kicking back and relaxing.

From here it was a relaxed pace heading north to get us up past Orchid beach. This is where we would camp the night up at beach camping zone 8 – Marloo, right on Fraser Islands Eastern beach. Here we just relaxed, cooked, drank several brews.

In the morning it was straight to the most northern point on Fraser, Sandy Cape. Now the real challenge of Fraser Island… Ngkala Rocks bypass track. This is the softest sand I have come across in my 4wding career. Still on 20 psi, and cracking the whip on all 400 ponies I realised quickly we both were not going to make it through.

Damo and the Raptor were not as quick to realise. Bogged to the diffs in supper soft sand a couple of sets of TREDs saved the day relatively quickly. In hindsight we should have dropped the pressures to 15 before recovering the Raptor, actually even before attempting the bypass all together.

Once on 15 psi we had no issues, just powered through the soft stuff and made it all the way to the cape where we spent a few hours. We managed to time coming back pretty well as there were heaps of vehicles stacked up at the Ngkala Rocks bypass track waiting to head north.

We were both extremely low on fuel heading back so we stopped off at Orchid Beach for a few litres on the way back south. We took the day to cruise down the eastern beach back to the Manta ray Barge. Stopping off again at Eli for lunch and one last float before saying goodbye to the island for another trip.

Fraser Island in 3 days it can be done. Of course if you have more time take advantage of it, it’s a magical part of Australia.
