The November 17 holiday - a Czech celebration of democracy and freedom
One of the most important public holidays in the Czech Republic is the November 17 holiday, officially known as the "Den boje za svobodu a demokracii a Mezinárodní den studentstva", or the "Day of Freedom and Democracy and International Students' Day". On this day, thousands of Czechs congregate in Národní Třída, Václavské Náměstí, and other significant locations around Prague to celebrate the student protest that sparked the Velvet Revolution and the demise of communist rule in the Czech Republic in 1989. I visited a few of the important locations and talked a bit about the history of this day, as I understand it. Join me for a cold walk around Prague :)
