In 1817, James Monroe became the fifth President of the United States and ushered in what newspapers called the Era of Good Feeling. During his presidency five new states joined the Union: Mississippi in 1817, Illinois in 1818, Alabama in 1819, Maine in 1820, and Missouri in 1821. Spanish Florida had become a dangerous frontier, and Monroe sent General Andrew Jackson to deal with the Seminole raids along the Georgia border. Jackson conquered the entire territory in three months, and in 1819 the United States acquired Florida from Spain. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 drew the line at 36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude, admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state and temporarily settling the question of slavery's spread — though Thomas Jefferson warned the compromise was not a real solution, only a silence. On December 2, 1823, Monroe announced the doctrine that bears his name, declaring the continents of North and South America closed to any further European colonization. The Monroe Doctrine would shape American foreign policy for the next two centuries.
