📜 CHAPTER 11 SUMMARY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In 1583 Sir Humphrey Gilbert set sail from England with a fleet of five ships under a Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I, the first Englishman to attempt to found a colony in North America under such authority. Before they had been two days at sea, the captain and many of the crew of the Raleigh, the largest and best-fitted ship in the fleet, fell ill and turned back to Plymouth. Gilbert pressed on with four ships. He arrived at the harbor of St. John's in Newfoundland, already famous as an international fishing ground visited every summer by ships from Portugal, France, Spain, and England. On August 5, 1583, in a solemn ceremony witnessed by fishermen from many nations, Gilbert's commission was read aloud, a follower placed a twig of hazel and a sod of earth in his hands as a symbol of possession, and proclamation was made that the lands belonged to Queen Elizabeth of England by the Grace of God. On the homeward voyage a violent storm wrecked the Delight with nearly a hundred men lost. The two remaining ships pressed on through fogs and contrary winds. During the storms, sailors on the Golden Hind watched Sir Humphrey Gilbert sitting calmly in the stern of the tiny ten-ton Squirrel reading a book. He called across the water: We are as near to heaven by sea as by land. That night the lights of the Squirrel went out. Gilbert was never seen again.
