WW2 AN/UPN-4 Radar Beacon

These units were deployed, usually behind enemy lines- to guide aircraft to a target or a drop zone. When an Allied radar signal was detected, the device would reply with one of five distinct codes to identify its location and provide the range and bearing to the unit. These units operated an extremely (for the time) high frequency and were undetectable by the enemy.

This technology helped the Allies win WW2 as it allowed us to navigate with precision at night or in poor weather to a target. It also allowed us to insert troops behind enemy lines.

The Axis Powers had technological superiority in almost every area except this one; they did not have RADAR, at least not soon enough to make a difference. By using this one secret technology, combined with our superior numbers, we were able to destroy the production capability of the Axis Powers and prevent them from deploying their superior weapons.

Jet aircraft, intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear weapons, were all within their reach. If we had not possessed the capability to precisely target their manufacturing, the world might be a very different place now.
