KOSOVO: K-FOR TROOPS CONFISCATE SERB WEAPONS
(21 Jun 1999) Serbo-Croat/Nat
Italian K-FOR troops have confiscated dozens of weapons from displaced Serbs attempting to return to Kosovo.
Escorted by Italian troops, several hundred of the Serbs crossed the Montenegro-Kosovo border and made their way back into the province on Monday.
They had been attempting to cross into Kosovo since Sunday but had feared for their safety.
Many are now returning to their homes following the K-L-A's agreement to disarm.
Italian troops in armoured vehicles escorted Serbs back to the town of Pec on Monday.
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's government has been calling for Serbs to return to the Kosovan cities.
Many Serbs feel they are now safe to return to their homes following the K-L-A's pledge to lay down its arms.
Tensions have been high in Pec since the end of the NATO air campaign.
Local Albanians have participated in numerous acts of vandalism, looting and even killing.
On Saturday three Serbs were killed in their homes.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbian)
"I will never go back to a united country. My son has been killed. His body was lying in a truck for five days."
SUPER CAPTION: Milan Bukamilic, Serb refugee
But as the Serbs poured across the border, Italian K-FOR troops found and confiscated dozens of weapons.
The troops allege that Serbs were trying to smuggle them back into the province.
