Michael Gove: 'Tier restrictions before November were not enough'

Cabinet office minister Michael Gove says coronavirus tier restrictions that were brought in before November "were not enough, in order to be able to ensure that the infection rate was brought down."

When questioned by Julia Hartley-Brewer about why people needed to purchase substantial meals with alcohol, Mr Gove answered that "table service driven by the need to serve meals and to serve people at the table is safer."

MPs are due to vote on Tuesday December 1st on a tougher tier system in England to follow when the second national lockdown ends on December 2nd. The three-tier approach would see 99% of the country placed in the two highest levels of restrictions.
