Portraying an African King
In this six-minute video, hear from Antien Knaap, assistant curator of Paintings, Art of Europe; and Nasser Rabbat, professor and director of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT, as they discuss Peter Paul Rubens’s "Mulay Ahmad" (about 1609). Based on a print made a century earlier, the figure in "Mulay Ahmad" appeared again in a later Rubens painting as the artist attempted to create an authentic portrayal of an African king.
