Remedios Varo and Norval Morrisseau, American Artists

Join this conversation about two dynamic artists and consider how recent acquisitions of important works by them have transformed the MFA’s presentation of modern art from the Americas. Remedios Varo (1908–1963) was a Spanish-born refugee of World War II who became a leader of Surrealism in Mexico. Norval Morrisseau (1932–2007) was a descendant of Anishinaabe healers who became one of Canada’s most influential First Nations painters. Neither is typically considered an American artist, but what is more American than their stories of immigration, indigeneity, and innovation?
