NASA to Launch Rockets during Solar Eclipse April 8 2024 to Study Earth’s Atmosphere | United States

NASA is preparing to launch three Atmospheric Perturbations around Eclipse Path (APEP) sounding rockets to investigate the influence of the solar eclipse on the Earth’s atmosphere. The rockets will be launched from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, USA, at different intervals before, during, and after the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

The objective of the mission is to study the short-term changes occurring in the ionosphere, a region of the Earth’s atmosphere that reflects and refracts radio signals and affects satellite communications. NASA has chosen sounding rockets for this study because they can reach altitudes too high for weather balloons but still lower than those reached by satellites.

Previously, the APEP rockets were launched during the annular solar eclipse on October 23 from the White Sands test facility in New Mexico. After recovering and refurbishing the rockets, NASA has equipped them with new instruments to gather data during the upcoming eclipse.

Lead scientist Aroh Barjatya highlights the significance of studying the ionosphere for understanding and improving satellite communications.
