STORYLINE:
Twelve Thai nationals have been killed and 11 taken hostage following the surprise attack by Hamas on Saturday, Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters in Bangkok, the ministry's spokesperson, Kanchana Patarachoke, said the latest reports confirmed eight people had been injured and were receiving hospital treatment.
"About the hostage situation, the number we have now stands at 11," Patarachoke said.
"In total, 12 people were killed based on reports that the embassy got from employers," she added.
The Israeli military estimated 1,000 Hamas fighters took part in Saturday's initial incursion.
The gunmen rampaged for hours, gunning down civilians and snatching people in towns, along highways and at a techno music festival attended by thousands in the desert.
In response, Israel hit more than 800 targets in Gaza so far, its military said, including airstrikes that leveled much of the town of Beit Hanoun in the enclave’s northeast corner.
Patarachoke elaborated on evacuation plans, saying that the Israel military was evacuating Thai nationals "from high-risk areas to safe areas".
She added that at a meeting of the Emergency Coordination Centre at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, plans to use Thai Air Force planes were put forward.
"Now, we are in a stage of preparation, so when the situation allows us to go to bring them back, we can do so smoothly and quickly," she said.
