Samuel - monarchy established
Kings - kingdom divided

Throw Israel's history. God was always pointing them towards their need for him.

We all need him.

Not just rescue from slavery to the Egyptians, but rescue from the slavery of sin.

Not just a God to be our king on the throne of our nation, but a God to rule from the throne of our hearts.

We need God's spirit to enable us to obey him with her whole hearts.

Israel's history constantly points the reader forward to a time when God will do just this.
