Aston Martin Boss Addresses Vettel Doubts

Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 after a long hiatus when they rebranded Racing Point. The team, however, went from being the third best team last year to the rear of the mid-field in 2021. Many have suggested that this is down to the new aero rules introduced prior to the 2021 season. Some have also suggested that their new signing Sebastian Vettel’s lack of good results hasn’t helped matters either. Tobias Moers, the CEO of Aston Martin has now looked at the performance of the brand’s F1 team and the signing of Sebastian Vettel while speaking to Auto Zeitung

Does Aston Martin’s CEO Regret F1 Team And Signing Vettel?

Tobias began by looking at the team’s slump in form

“At the moment... perhaps the changes to the regulations were underestimated. The Aston Martin Formula One Team takes care of that independently, so I'm not that close”

He was then asked if he regrets the signing of Sebastian Vettel. He responded by saying

“I am not so sure about that. I already believe in him. The fact that Nico Hulkenberg has now been signed [as reserve driver] should not be overinterpreted. It's a normal process, but, as I said, I'm not that close”

“Car production and Formula 1 are two separate business units. First of all, I accept with thanks what momentum from Formula 1 is radiating on the brand”

“I can only say that Lawrence Stroll, who is responsible for the Formula 1 team has clear goals and is building a new factory in Silverstone for Formula 1. This is a long-term commitment”

He signed off by revealing whether the F1 team is a necessary investment for the car company

“Absolutely. If you say you want to change brand perception, then Formula 1 makes a lot of sense”

Former F1 driver Romain Grosjean has stated that he had “seen enough blue flags in Formula 1” after securing a podium in Indycar

It makes Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff “proud that with his injured hand”, Romain Grosjean “has now fitted a seat with Mercedes”

Wolff added that “it will be very special to see him in France, in front of his own crowd. Romain and Mercedes will do some laps”

McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl feels that “it's impressive to see what” his driver Lando Norris is “pulling off this year”

He also thinks that if Norris “keeps developing like that as a driver and as a person, he has everything in some years which is required in order to be a top driver in Formula 1”

However, he also thinks that “to be a world champion is then again a different story. That's something that is always difficult to predict”

“You need to be in the right car at the right moment, and you need to pull it off also as a driver 23 times a year and not just [a few] times” added Seidl

Williams CEO Jost Capito has suggested that “when Mercedes makes a driver an offer, it's hard for another team to retain him. It doesn't matter which driver, in which team”

He also feels that “it's too early now. Several contracts are expiring. At some point, the silly season will start. Don't let it start earlier than necessary”

He further explained that “at the moment it would be wrong to focus on alternatives or ask what a driver will do next year. That's too early” as they “need to focus on the team first”

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko feels that “in terms of tyre handling and tyre use for sure” Mercedes’ Lewis “Hamilton is maybe the best in that”

He also feels that the FIA has “to stop with these rules about the white lines. One time you can drive over it, the other time you can't”

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner thinks that 2021 “will be interesting because Mercedes and Red Bull Racing are very close to each other”

“Neutrally, of course, it would be nice if Max [Verstappen] wins, so that the championship remains open. Max is doing a great job and he is driving aggressively”

McLaren’s Lando Norris thinks that their car with the one-off livery for Monaco “will be the best-looking car on the grid by a very long way”

He also told McLaren CEO Zak Brown “It looks even better than” their “current livery but he didn’t sound so convinced by that”

His other driver Daniel Ricciardo thinks that if the title fight “was really down to the wire, then Lewis [Hamilton] has shown some strong signs”

“But then again, if there's a gap, Max [Verstappen] goes for it. That's why obviously” Daniel respects “Max a lot”
Will Hulkenberg race in F1 again?
