Smigiel railway October 2002

On a couple of wet days we saw lots of action on the Smigiel railway:

0:00 Late morning on Monday 22 October a Lxd2 struggles in wet conditions to pull four empty sg wagons on transporters out of the loop at Wilkowo Polskie.

2:43 A railcar arrives at Bielawy and pulls into the loop to allow the waiting freight train to pass.

4:50 The freight at speed between Zegrowko and Zegrowo.

5:18 Between Nowa Wies Koscianska and Smigiel Zachod.

5:56 At Smigiel station.

7:04 Crossing the road at Stare Bojanowo to pass under the standard gauge, taking something of a run at the gradient up to the transfer yard.

7:36 Unloading the wagons from the transporters at Stare Bojanowo and the sg local goods collecting them.

9:49 A loaded coal wagon that the sg train had dropped off is hauled across the road - curses on white van man.

10:30 The same railcar between Wilkowo Polskie and Bielawy - when we first visited this line in the 1990s this was just a dirt road.

11:44 On Tuesday 22 October the wagon that had been picked up from Stare Bojanowo the previous day is hauled by Lxd2 through Sniaty.

12:18 The same train passing through Ziemin - the station here was some way south of the village centre.

14:03 The unloading process. At one stage the lorry driver was overseeing the operation by standing on the top of the box and, no doubt due to the wet conditions, fell to the ground. Luckily, he did not hit the crane stabilisers and was surprisingly lightly injured considering the height from which he fell.

14:59 With the wagon unloaded, a railcar arrives.

15:13 On this trip we encountered a number of other enthusiasts - two Czechs were, I think, staying at Smigiel station and we saw them on both days, while the railcar had brought some (presumably) Polish enthusiasts who swiftly returned to Smigiel.

15:20 The railcar departs, shortly followed by the Lxd2 and empty wagon.
