The enduring success of and obsession with Marilyn Monroe spawned a plethora of lookalikes, as film studios were desperate to get their very own “Marilyn”–and the cash that came with her. Of course, many of the sirens were beautiful and talented in their own right, despite having to live and work under a Marilyn-sized shadow.
For some blonde bombshells from the 50s and 60s, the pressure to succeed in a cut-throat, often uncaring industry was hard on their mental and physical health. Martine Carol, the European rival to Marilyn Monroe, died of a heart attack at the shockingly young age of 46. Marie McDonald turned down the chance to study journalism at Columbia University to pursue acting, only to die of an overdose at just 42. And Barbara Lang tried to commit suicide in 1958–sources at the time said it was because her career wasn’t going the way she so desperately wanted it to.
Other actresses of the era held long, fulfilling careers, with some staying in acting until late in life. Popular “B” movie star Adele Jergens lived until 84, following a successful run with Columbia Pictures. College-educated Martha Hyer worked right up until her last film, The Day of the Wolves, which played in the early 1970s. And Mamie Van Doren published her autobiography called Playing the Field and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
