Michael Nesmith & The First National Band - The Crippled Lion

The Crippled Lion showcases two signature qualities that make Michael Nesmith & The First National Band stand out among the country rock pantheon: Red Rhodes’s masterful pedal steel playing -- which Nez then innovatively stacked -- and Nez’s songwriting with its idiomatic center of rhythm and poetry. Recorded in February and March 1970, Magnetic South is among the first country rock albums. The Crippled Lion follows the album’s opening triptych.

Nez's first stab at The Crippled Lion was on May 29, 1968, at RCA Victor Studios in Nashville, TN. These famous Nashville Sessions birthed country rock. The Crippled Lion is one of five songs on Magnetic South that had previously been recorded with session musicians while Nez was with The Monkees.
