Michael Nesmith's Memorial for Peter Tork

In 1965, four very different young men were brought together to create something bigger than themselves. In the ‘60s and even today it’s easy to write the Monkees off as “the Pre-Fab Four,” or a manufactured pop group that exist purely within the confines of a live-action cartoon. After all, these guys didn’t come together organically. They didn’t start from humble beginnings in a garage somewhere and catch the ear of a passing record producer that dug their sound. It was a job; most of the sounds were already made, and these young men were “just” the missing pieces the puzzle needed. Michael and Peter didn’t go to one another’s home for hours on end, playing guitar and writing tunes together. They weren’t close, they didn’t share secrets, they likely more often argued than agreed. Nez himself mentions he and Peter “weren’t playmates” but rather “work associates.”
Despite this, Nez, Peter, Micky and Davy, for all their differences shared one important thing: they are the only four men in the world that know what it was like to be a Monkee. For two years they were thrown into a chaotic whirlwind filled with shooting schedules, tour dates, rabid, screaming fans clamoring to snatch a piece of them. In the end, it’s this bond that held them together.

The outpouring of emotion and affection since Davy and Peter’s passing prove the Monkees weren’t just a pre-fabricated marketing ploy. As a group and as individuals, they’ve created memories in so many lives, but now there’s one less person who shared those memories with Nez.
