Time and Place for Meditation
Is it important to sit in the same spot for meditation everyday and is it good to meditate when you are exhausted?
It is not required to sit at the same spot everyday when you are meditating. The scriptures differentiate all religious and spiritual activities into various categories. One of them is called Nitya Karma, which is like going to school. You mark your attendance and you can sit anywhere in the class. It is something you do everyday. Such karma is really not going to take you very far. A good example of this is when you look around and see people who are well into the later years of their life and have been chanting for many years, yet they have the same issues as a fifteen year old. Clearly their worship, their Nitya karma did not do perhaps what it could have done. The second category is Naimittika karma, which is similar to an examination hall, where you sit and do not get up for three hours unless you require a new answer sheet.
Similarly, in meditation there is an ordinary course, where you do something and are reinforcing it everyday. For that there are no real rules except the ones you define yourself or that have been passed on to you. But when you do meditation for a specific purpose and in a specific way then it becomes a Naimittika karma.
