Welcome back to TAIWAN! Today we are in Donggang 東港, in the south of Taiwan to experience some rare STREET FOOD! The port town is famous for its crazy seafood, but we will be exploring the local snacks today.

We visit the traditional morning market, where we heard of a snack known as Double Run Cake. Layers of mochi and brown sugar melt together and is not too sweet! One box cost 100 NTD (USD $3.34). They did not let us film at their stall, but this “double run cake” was unlike any mochi we have seen before.

Next, we walked not far from the market to a street food stall serving mantou (steamed bread) with a TWIST. The mantou is steamed and then grilled over charcoal, and we ordered ours covered in cream and condensed milk. This is another rare street food that cannot be found elsewhere in Taiwan. The bun was fluffy on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside and EXTREMELY sweet from condensed milk. There are savoury versions on the menu as well. Our bun cost 15 NTD (USD $0.50).

After the mantou, we were still hungry! We decided to try a traditional Taiwanese meatball dish. Taiwanese meatballs are glutinous and full of flavour, with toppings including garlic and coriander. We also ordered Taiwanese sausage to pair with the meatballs. It was delicious and the bowl of meatballs cost 30 NTD and a sausage cost 30 NTD (USD $1.00).

On our way to the next restaurant, we came across some ladies drying bright orange mullet roe. Taiwan’s mullet roe is very traditional. It’s pressed, dried and salted. We tried to speak with them in our broken Chinese and they were really friendly. Mullet roe is popular in this area, among other types of roe in Donggang like Oil fish roe, Marlin row and tuna roe.

There was one more unique and traditional dish in Donggang we wanted to try: rou guo 肉粿. It is a creamy rice porridge that has pork, compressed rice and Donggang’s specialty Sakura Shrimp. Sakura Shrimp is so rare that you can only get it in Donggang and one area in Japan. They are small and bright red. A medium bowl of rou guo costs 50 NTD (USD $1.67) but the owner was so friendly, she wouldn’t let us pay! If you want a dish that represents Donggang, check this place out.

Before leaving Donggang, we visited Donglong Temple (東港東隆宮) - home of the King’s Boat Burning Festival. Thank you to Wes Davies for the amazing footage!

Finally, we returned to Kaohsiung to eat one final meal. We wanted roasted duck and knew of a take out shop that roasts full ducks in massive vats over wood fire. Although it’s cooked street food style, they serve it as you would have in a fancy restaurant. They carefully carve the duck meat and skin. You get flour wraps, house sauce and scallion. The skin is rich with spices and the meat is juicy. The remainder of the tough meat and bones are stir fried with basil and onions and you eat it with gloves. We ordered a half duck which cost 250 NTD (USD $8.34). It was CRAZY delicious.
