MLK's daughter addresses current political climate
(9 Jan 2020) A week after the U.S. drone strike that killed Iran's most powerful commander, Bernice King asks that people keep in mind one lesson her father exemplified: to value all human life.
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have heightened since the strike in Baghdad that killed Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleiman.
King said her father, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was "a faithful patriot of the United States of America and yet a global citizen and cared about what happened in other nations and other countries and saw them as a part of his human family."
She spoke to reporters after announcing commemorative activities that emphasize voting and nonviolence on the upcoming national holiday. She also shared her thoughts on the 2020 presidential election and 'cancel' culture.
King said it's crucial that voters in 2020 elect representatives who can work through partisan divides.
"When they get in office, can they work together to bridge?" she said. "That's very important."
