Researching the causes and prevention of type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a major cause of ill health and mortality. It is estimated that 463 million people have diabetes worldwide and that by 2045 this number will have risen to 700 million.
In July 2021, Professor Nick Wareham (Director of the MRC Epidemiology Unit, Co-Director of the Institute of Metabolic Science, Honorary Consultant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Cambridge), joined us for the MRC Seminar Series to share how work taking place at the MRC Epidemiology Unit has contributed to the understanding the causes of type 2 diabetes and the translation of that knowledge into preventive action through early detection and interventions targeted at high risk groups.
He also outlined how these individual-level approaches need to be balanced by research that informs societal level change in the determinants of risk.
