Everything you always wanted to know about jet lag ...but were too tired to ask
A biological clock in every cell allows our bodies to prepare for the differing demands of day and night, by driving circadian rhythms in our performance and physiology. Normally our body clocks are fine-tuned each day by the schedule we keep, particularly the timing of meals and light exposure. When we see bright light or eat at the wrong time, as in jet-lag or shift work, it disrupts our internal rhythms and increases the risk of chronic illness. Conversely, the effectiveness of many drugs and surgeries can vary with the biological time of treatment.
Dr John O’Neill’s research focuses on the key mechanisms of cellular circadian timekeeping and how the many daily rhythms in our biology come about. He spoke to MRC about his research in March 2021 as part of our seminar series.
