STORYLINE:
Rescuers in Taiwan's Taroko National Park were on Thursday searching for dozens of people still missing a day after the earthquake which struck in Hualien County.
The strongest quake in a quarter-century damaged buildings killed 10 people and left others stranded in remote areas, while tremors were felt in the country's capital.
About 600 people including tourists and hotel employees were stranded inside a hotel, the Silks Place Taroko, according to Chief of Special Search and Rescue Team Chen Yi-fong.
Authorities said the employees and guests were safe and had food and water, and that work to repair the roads to the hotel was close to completion.
The quake and its aftershocks caused landslides and damaged roads, bridges and tunnels. The national legislature and sections of Taipei's main airport suffered minor damage.
Local authorities measured the initial quake's strength as magnitude 7.2, while the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 7.4.
