The History of benenden health and the fight against TB

Meet Mervyn Quinlan, Curator of the Mervyn Quinlan museum at Benenden Hospital in Kent, as he describes the history of benenden health in a short film produced April 2010.

Find out how benenden health's history in the fight against Tuberculosis (TB) began in 1905 when a Post Office telegrapher, Charles Garland, promoted a mutual membership model as an easily affordable way for ordinary Post Office workers to get effective treatment in the event of contracting TB. This mutual model formed the framework for the modern organisation that is benenden health today.

The video describes why TB was so prevalent in this particular working environment, how Charles Garland sought to address this and what treatment involved -- in an age before modern drugs almost eradicated TB in the UK.

Information contained within this video (e.g. job titles and trading styles) correct at time of production.
