Avoid Dye Migration By Screen Printing With Green Galaxy Gamma Blocker Black

Hey Screen printers, it’s Ryan from Ryonet and in this instructional video we’re going to show you how to screen print water base HSA inks onto dark polyester garments using Green Galaxy Gamma Blocker Black underbase.

Traditionally screen printing any ink on dark polyesters is difficult, at high tempuratures over 280 degrees the dye gets released from the fabric and begins to migrate directly into the inks sitting on the fabric.

so if you are printing on a black garment with a traditional white ink and curing at a normal 320/330 degree temperature you would experience this dye migration and your white ink would turn gray.

Plastisol inks combat this with thick low bleed blockers or a combination of low bleed and low cure technology.

Printing on polyester with water base or HSA inks is even more difficult becuase the ink is thinner. Some ground can be made by using warp drive low cure additive but still dye migration exists.

Gamma blockers solves this problem for water base HSA printing. By mixing a fine grit carbon black into our green galaxy clear core base we were able to create a ink that blocks virtually all dye migration at normal temps.

Gamma Blocker black can be printed through a 80-230 mesh screen, but typically is printed through a 156 or 200, unlike other carbon blacks on the market .

Due to its smooth consistency, blocker black flows smoothly through high or low mesh which gives more versatility to print higher detail and provides a better/smoother underbase to stack color on top of.

Before you start printing, its always best to mix your ink.

For multiple color designs, print blocker black down as your primary underbase, two passes with a 70 medium durometer blade works well with a 45 degree squeegee angle. As you can see I am using a generous amount of ink to avoid it drying out in the screen. I also leave a thick top screen flood between prints. After your underbase, Flash until dry to the touch, this typically takes only a few seconds, then overprint your next color. If white is one of the colors or the primary color, the white will cover the entire blocker black as you see here, then you flash again, and print the color on top. For an extra bright white, you may need to print flash print the white as well.

Gamma Blocker cures at normal temperature with a recommended dwell time of 2-3 minutes at 320 degrees.

You can also add warp drive low cure additive into your ink which lowers the cure point to 260 degrees and reduces your risk of dye migration even more.

As always, test your parameters first and be sure to do a wash test prior to going into production.

Gamma blocker black cleans up just like any normal water base ink, card ink from the screen, store it back in its container, and clean with soap and water or a little bit or Ryonet’s SGREEN AQUA ink degradent

Because the use of blocker black requires more screens having more colors on your press and open stations for cool down time an automatic press with more open stations is advantageous for production.

Using gamma blocker black and water base provides you the printer, a higher quality print that is also PVC and Phalete free. These water based inks feel softer, deposit less, and stretch better than thick low bleed plastisols and are also required when working with larger companies such as Nike and Adidas.
