The Forgotten Slave Trade of Asia & the Pacific #PacificSlaveTrade

Starting in the 16th and 17th centuries after the first circumnavigation of the globe and the beginning of globalization, for the first time the American continents became permanently linked to neighboring landmasses across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and during this period many thousands of slaves from Asia and the Pacific including Chinese, Filipinos, Micronesians, Polynesians and Melanesians were brought to the Americas through the Manila Galeons or other private trafficking schemes known as black-birding, which devastated the populations of many Pacific islands. Today, millions of individuals throughout the Americas have ancestry from the Trans-Pacific slave trade, although they have not formed the same tight-knit ethnic communities as the descendants of African slaves in the Americas, making them far less visible and "forgotten."
